The Blue Marlin Fishing Project

If there is an exciting hobby one can engage in at sea, it is blue marlin fishing. Few other things equal the thrill of capturing one of the most prized marlin species. Overcoming their spirited fight to come out with one of them with their marvelous form and sometimes, enormous size is quite rewarding.

Location

Blue marlin inhabit all the tropical oceans. Their population is kept at steady level through spawning. It is done in select locations including Mauritius,Hawaii, the west of the Atlantic where the Caribbean islands are and the eastern end of the Atlantic where the Guinea Gulf is.

Species

There are two species of this fish; the Atlantic and the Pacific blue marlin. Research has verified that both species are genetically alike. This has been put down to a lot of the p-phenotype being in both oceans. This is in contrast to the a-phenotype which has not been found in either ocean.

Weight

The male and female species are quite different. When fully grown, the male rarely goes over 300 pounds mark in weight. The female on the other hand grows to reach 1,000 pounds and even more. Scientists and anglers continue to differ about this. The largest species of blue marlin ever caught is a Pacific species that weighed in at 1,805 pounds in Hawaii. In the Atlantic, the greatest catch was a 1,402 pound one that was made in Brazil.

Baiting And Luring Options

Various techniques and apparatus are used. Method selection is based on the size of the catch being targeted as well as sea conditions. Methods have also been influenced by local traditions and practices. Artificial lures, live bait or rigged natural baits are the three methods used.

Lures

Artificial lure fishing is one popular method because blue marlins put up a great fight at attempts to capture them. Its limitation is that the bait cannot be trolled fast so that it remains alive. This method can only be used in fairly small fishing areas. It is the method used in the fishery in Kona,Hawaii.

As blue marlin fishing has developed, the best hunting spots have been discovered. They include the Atlantic, the Bahamas where the aggressive Bahamas Billfish contest is held, Bermuda and Vitoria in Brazil which is highly regarded and where the International Fish Game Association is hosted.
