Pop Art - Painting Live Do's And Don'ts

The beauty of Shenandoah Valley has been painted by a local resident from Route 1 Bridgewater on canvas. This artist has been painting for 36 years and her goal is not just to paint nature and carry around oils and easel in mountain ridges and rolling cornfields. She uses her collection of cut-outs from daily newspapers over the years in order to paint.

According to this artist, the clippings let her put back white or black, and other old colors to her painting exactly the way she wants to. To create larger and more beautiful paintings, she clips images of animals and objects, she adds. She took and held up a newspaper scrap of two millstones, and explained how she used it to paint her 15 by 4 mural which is found on her family room. Although she uses photographs for detail in weather board buildings, wood land animals, and farm crops or equipment, she also visualizes parts of her compositions and would gesture toward the large wall mural. For this, she only uses water. But water is easy to paint with, because it dries out fast.

She displayed another newspaper photograph of a snow scene and said she plans to begin a painting from it very soon. Snow is far easier than anything else because it goes fast. This artist only hangs two or three paintings in her home, which are the large mural, and two other smaller scenes. According to her, the paintings are all given away or sold right after she finished painting them.

There is a furniture store in Hagerstown, Maryland that buys her paintings. She also paints upon requests from her neighbors and best friends. She is often buried in work because of the number of orders. Before Christmas season she receives the most number of orders because people use her paintings for gifts. Native to Green mount section of the Rockingham County, this artist first started with painting lessons when she was 13, which she received from a nice old lady neighbor. She would sit an entire afternoon for a lesson with the old lady, which is only as cheap as 25 cents. Her mother made a small lightweight pallet using a drill and paring knife a long time ago, and she showed it. A note telling about how it was made was decoupage on the old pallet even though it was stained with paint all over.

She saved a lot of items from their church, which was put down six years ago, and placed the items for display on their family room. The view to the river near their house can be seen clearly through the huge glass wall covering an entire face of the room. She said they decided on the glass wall to bring the natural outdoors indoors.

Something was amiss when she was painting the mural. The artist even had to redo the painting because halfway because the children didn't like the mixture of tithe painting, bright foliage in rusts, gold and reds to fit the family room. Since other paintings and the sunny den would most likely not get noticed, and that the attention of people will just go the mural, she decided that she would keep her house as it is.
